Over the course of my life I had multiple jobs that even though I hated them I’m glad I went through the experience. I’ve worked in retail stores, fast food restaurants and even a meat plant. In almost every job I had I always met people who in their own words “were sick and tired” of working there.
That’s not to say having a job is a bad thing, in fact I believe it’s needed. Specially when you are young, they don’t teach you about money, responsibilities or taxes in school. My first job gave me a sense of control and I learned to value and manage my money as a result of that fast food part-time job. But the reality is, unless you really enjoy your occupation most people are simply unhappy with their jobs. Recent polls have shown that nearly 2 out of 3 workers are simply not satisfied with their current job.
With that in mind, let’s talk about signs that you might hate your job:
- Sign #1: You constantly check the time during work to see if it’s time to leave.
- Sign #2: You countdown the hours till it’s time to go to work
- Sign #3: You do not answer any calls from work during your day off.
- Sign #4: You get happy when you get to go home early even if you need the hours.
- Sign #5: You pretend to be sick just to get the day off.
- Sign #6: You talk to your co-workers about how much your job “sucks”
- Sign #7: You are always thinking about quitting to do something else, but never do.
Be honest, have you ever or have you recently done any of the 7 things mentioned above? Because if you have don’t feel bad, we all have done at least 1 one of those in our lives.
But if this is your current situation right now then that is a different story, because a very smart man once said:
The definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
You can’t expect to get a different result from doing the same thing, I’ve known people who hate their jobs and yet they continue to do it for years and years not because they don’t have a choice, but because they think someday it will get better for them.
Now let me be clear about something
I’m in no way suggesting that you should QUIT your job if you are not happy. But if that’s your case the one thing you should be doing is having an alternative. Whether that is furthering your education, pursuing a different career path or simply having a backup plan which what I personally did. But the important thing to remember is to do something, because if not you’ll be in the same situation just as described in this CareerBuilder commercial:
My main goal with this post is to help you reflect about where you are now and where you would want to be. I did this a few years back and I use my hate for my job to inspire me to start my online business, it was not easy and I made a lot of sacrifices to make it happen.
But in the end, since we only have one life to live shouldn’t we be doing everything we can to make sure we have NO regrets when is time to leave this earth?
